A simple filling may not be sufficient to restore your smile if you have an extensively decayed or damaged tooth. In such cases, Dr. Warren Boardman from Ridgewood Dentistry in Ridgewood, New Jersey, recommends a dental crown to restore the function and appearance of your compromised tooth. Made of porcelain, these caps are cosmetically and functionally the best restorative procedure to revive damaged or decayed teeth.
A dental crown is a “cap” shaped like a tooth that slips over a damaged or decayed tooth to enhance its appearance and structure. We manufacture your crown after taking detailed measurements of your smile. Because of this specification, your crown fits well and looks natural like the other teeth.
Why do I need a crown? Dental crowns have multiple functional and cosmetic functions. We may recommend a dental crown to:
Dental crowns can be made from numerous materials, including metal alloys, gold, and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). Ours are made from porcelain/ceramic to ensure your restoration resembles your enamel, both in feel and appearance.
Typically, you need at least two visits with Ridgewood Dentistry to get a dental crown. After an in-depth consultation with our dental team, the next step is to prepare your tooth. After numbing your tooth, we’ll remove and reshape your enamel to create space for a crown. Next, we’ll take detailed impressions of your prepped tooth and the surrounding teeth and send the details to a dental lab to craft your bespoke crown.
Before your permanent crown is ready, Dr. Boardman will place a provisional crown to protect your prepped tooth. A few weeks later, you’ll return to our clinic to install your new crown. We’ll remove the temporary restoration, clean your tooth, and try your permanent crown. We’ll make a few adjustments to your restoration until you are 100% happy with the fit and appearance. If all is well, we’ll use dental cement to bond your crown permanently to your tooth.
Porcelain crowns are artificial, but they look natural. The translucent nature of porcelain allows it to reflect light to look like a natural tooth.
Besides appearance, the other benefits of dental crowns include the following:
Although dental crowns are durable, it doesn’t mean they don’t require maintenance. To keep your dental crowns looking their best, brush and floss your teeth daily, and don’t forget about biannual dental appointments. Finally, avoid using your teeth as tools and wear a mouth guard to protect your crowns from sports injuries and teeth grinding.
We design and manufacture dental crowns from high-grade materials to deliver the most functional and esthetically appealing outcome. Our dental crowns fit well and look so natural that you may forget your tooth has a crown on it!
